Josh’s Reflections on the First 10 Years

LimeCuda just celebrated our 10 year anniversary, read more and see some interesting stats.

I watched the founding of LimeCuda 10 years ago from afar. I was working at a CPA firm in Macon, GA when Blake and a friend from College, founded LimeCuda as part of a business plan class / competition. Blake has a great history of the LimeCuda biz plan competition win here.

Blake and I met during our early high school (translate: awkward) years and became close friends. We worked building Mountain Laurel Railings and doing construction / renovation in Murphy, NC.

My Early Years

In 2010 I started doing “web design” by helping my then girlfriend (now wife) with a website for her photography business. The coolest thing I had done was click “Publish” on my new Macbook’s iWeb. The whole world could now see something I had created.

I had seen the work Blake was doing but didn’t realize there was overlap with what I was doing. He started with a focus on “SEO” and those letters meant nothing to me. When he realized my interest in the web, he pushed me to check out this WordPress thing. I did and it became a slowly building love.

I Was A Little Naive

After doing a few projects, I naively thought “I can do this” and went full-time, self-employed at the end of 2011. I was mistaken.

As a newlywed trying to support a family in an industry and skill with which I had little experience, I floundered. I made a couple hundred dollars a month while cutting my teeth at a theme shop, web customization shop, a marketing agency, and finally a large plugin / enterprise agency.

It was a long, hard battle that we like to refer to as my “college” years for this industry. It was a real school of hard knocks as I learned what it meant to not only do the work we do but also manage clients, proposals, contracts, cash-flow – everything, on my own.

Joining LimeCuda

Throughout this time, Blake and I always stayed in touch and worked together on many projects. I was a contractor and LimeCuda was one of my freelance clients.

Blake and I have known each other since we were 14. We started working for his dad early on and had a very independent work ethic at that time. We’ve always had an ability to lean into each other and naturally push each other up and along whenever needed.

We already talked like an old, married couple with the best sort of open communication, and frank crotchety banter. So, we had the discussion in 2016 and decided to get hitched as partners in business.

Pushing the LimeCuda brand forward had already been my priority for a while. All my relationships and work became LimeCuda’s. Our mutual interests and skills complemented so well, I knew it was the best decision for me even before I became an owner / partner.

What We’ve Learned

Personally, and with LimeCuda, the last 10 years have brought some hard times as well as profitable times. We’ve been able to watch companies rise and fall around us and learn from those experiences.

There have been several decisions that I think have been critical to our survival:

  1. Keeping it simple. We’ve been intentionally slow to grow our own team. We want to be specialized in what we do while maintaining strong, professional relationships with others that are masters of the skills we lack. We’re not interested in building a large “agency” to meet momentary needs in our network.
  2. Doing right by people. We’ve worked hard to build great relationships with our clients. Part of that has been taking full, personal ownership over the success of projects we take on. We’re also open and honest with people when their project isn’t a good fit. Yes, we’ve had hiccups along the way, however we’ve made huge leaps in redeeming those relationships. We aim to always do right by people.
  3. Focusing on lifestyle & health. Money is secondary. Yes, we need to make money (and a certain amount) to support our families. However, having a healthy lifestyle has been made a priority. There is a need to have checks and balances to define what is enough when you have your own business. We could always make more and there is no one stopping us from that being the motivation. But the lifestyle is the biggest thing we can control when searching for happiness on this path compared to a traditional job.
  4. Trust. Blake and I have known each other more than half our lives. We built our work ethics together. Our worldviews and values were defined together. We can lean into each other as we have family troubles or illness. We can trust that the other is taking care of “their house” without worrying “are they doing enough”.

It would be naive to believe there aren’t many more lessons to be learned. But, I’m excited about the next 10 years and what the new decade has in store – good or bad.

How We Grew in 2017

2017 was a wonderful year for LimeCuda – January 2018 was actually our 8th year anniversary!

As we’re starting to head full steam into 2018 I thought I’d (Blake) share some news and reflections. First up…

A new baby in the mix

My wife and I are thrilled to announce the birth of Micah Roger Imeson in early October. It was the “boring” delivery we were praying for and so far he has been a delightfully easy baby.

A major thanks to all the clients who very graciously allowed me to take two weeks of time mostly ignoring email and project work. There is much I love about the work we do at LimeCuda and the flexibility to attend to our families is easily our chief perk.

What would a baby announcement be without oodles of cute pictures? Here are 9 photos out of the probably 9000 we’ve taken 🙂

A change of scenery for the Mallards

This was also a year of big change for my (Josh writing now) family. We finally sold our home in Georgia and have embarked on a new adventure in South Carolina! We’ve landed in a 100 year old mill converted into lofts in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It’s a beautiful and creative space with an awesome community. My 5 year old loves meeting new people everyday on the elevator and talks about how he loves his new apartment better than his “boring house”. This area is a great hub being within an hour of Greenville, Asheville, and Charlotte and a great spot for launching some memorable weekend adventures.

We’ve been here only a couple of months and have met some wonderful people, great organizations to get the kids involved, as well as found a great church community we look forward to getting more invested with.

Growing our persistent team

As many of our clients may have noticed, our team has been growing a little bit in 2017 as well. This year has been hectic that we shamefully let our newest team member, Elizabeth Copeland, get settled without making a big announcement to the world here. Her official job title is “Project Manager”, a role which she has filled wonderfully, but she wears many other hats including designer, developer, and Blake & Josh wrangler. We really look forward to continuing to work with her in 2018!

Additionally, we’ve also had the pleasure of working with several new designers and developers this year to help us bring your projects to life. We can now say that our clients sites have been crafted with love in California, Georgia, Michigan, South Carolina, and Texas.

Focus for 2018

As we look forward to 2018, we’re focusing on our commitment to “doing great work for awesome people”. Our biggest assets at LimeCuda are our awesome clients and the unique relationships we have with each of them. We love working with cool people on projects and passions that we can support and stand behind. If we can add value in those scenarios, we want to find a way to make it happen!

LIMECUDA version 3. no wait, 4.0?

I’m honestly struggling to contain the excitement I have for the new LimeCuda!

So I won’t…

You may be thinking this is just a new logo or a fancy new website. Those are definitely included but for us, this is so much more.

Let me explain…

Updating the brand

Even though 6 years feels long in our industry we’re still a young company learning where we fit in and can add the most value. We have been evolving and pivoting over the last few years. We try new things, learn from our mistakes, then push forward.

A consequence of this was that our existing website and brand no longer truly represented who we had become as a company.

When LimeCuda was born, the tagline was “Refreshingly Aggressive Web”. This made sense particularly for that time because there was a lot of opportunities on the web for helping small businesses. LimeCuda recognized that many small businesses weren’t capitalizing on this potential. So, the position was to get aggressive on behalf of our clients in taking full advantage of those opportunities.

We still think this underlying idea is great. However, when reflecting upon our most successful projects over the years, the common underlying element has always been the relationships that we’ve been able to cultivate with our clients.

In this context, the term “Aggressive” doesn’t convey a proper or positive personality trait for building great relationships. “Refreshing” does though :). So, we decided to fully embrace the “Refreshing” portion of the existing brand.

We are dropping the “Aggressive” terminology from most of our public assets. Pivoting the focus away from the barracuda portion of the LimeCuda name and toward the refreshing nature of the lime. This is now reflected in the updated logo and color palette.

Crafting a new website

When designing the new website, our goals were pretty straightforward. We wanted to showcase our latest work with deeper substance as well as convey the value we place on great relationships with our clients.

So, we decided to start creating case studies for certain projects while also designing a way to sprinkle testimonials throughout the whole site. We added this into an updated design that matched the new brand and let simplicity really be our guide.

Practicing what we preach

One of the key things that we also wanted to approach with this “re-launch” was to be very intentional and regular with our blog postings and Social Media engagement. We’ve been preaching these things to our clients for years and have seen first-hand the amazing impact little steps in this area can have for a business over time.

We’re establishing strategies for engaging consistently but still adding value and not just noise. This should be fairly straightforward for us since we’re adamant about maintaining our own personality and letting that shine (with Blake being a good filter for the occasional edges in my own personality 🙂 ).

We’ll also be experimenting with a posting calendar to help us stay on top of regular postings and optimize how-and-when we’re posting for the greatest impact.

Excuse to play around

Now for the fun stuff (or nerdy stuff if you will). This was my favorite portion of this entire process.

Working on a personal website gives us a chance to play around with a lot of new things. Here’s just a quick breakdown of things that we’ve played around with or implemented in this site build that we’ll be rolling out for new client sites:

  • Created a project starter repository
In the past we had a starter theme and a core functionality plugin that we used when creating new client sites. We wanted to update this process. We created a starter git repository which includes our updated starter theme and core plugins in a single repository. We structured this to allow us to take advantage of WPEngine git set up for deployments.
  • Switched to Gulp for task running
Like most people, my first interaction with a Javascript task runner was with using Grunt. I still like Grunt, however there were certain benefits to using Gulp that forced me to give it a try on a recent project. I liked it so we decided to switch for all our future projects. We’ve now got it integrated nicely with our starter repository.
  • Mobile first
This theme was a new and deeper dive into building a website with a mobile first design approach. Is it perfect? Nope! But it was definitely helpful in allowing us to not only see the benefits of this approach when it comes to resource management, but also the benefits associated with having cleaner and more efficient styling process for mobile views.
  • Exploring new ways for managing dynamic content
One of the things we’re very passionate about is empowering our clients when it comes to managing their own sites. This is the main appeal of using a software such as WordPress. This passion drives us to explore usable and more intuitive ways for clients to manage more complex content elements on their site. Check out the blog post I wrote about how we’re managing this in our own Case Studies here.

You can check out previous site versions in this post.

We have much still to do, but as we tell clients, it is better to launch a new design if it is a big improvement than to spend years trying to perfect it before re-launching.

Launch and iterate!

We’d love to hear what you think, drop us a comment.
